Who is Shan?
The background, context, and why her statement changed everything:
Shan Isabell,
an Australian musician with experience writing songs, releasing music, and teaching music classes since she was very young.
In June 2024, Shan made a public statement describing the alleged abuse she says she suffered at the hands of musician Jupiter Keyes, a figure deeply embedded in both the professional and personal life of Alice Glass (formerly of Crystal Castles). He is often described as the force behind Alice’s solo project.
Jupiter has served as the primary songwriter/producer on Alice Glass’s solo work, shaped and managed her public image and interviews, performed alongside her live, and was married to her for 10 years. He has remained a constant presence in her career and daily life, operating not as an occasional collaborator but as her central decision-maker.
In Shan’s statement, she details Jupiter Keyes’ sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, as well as witnessing the same type of conduct towards Alice Glass. She later disclosed how Alice Glass herself became a participant in the pressure and harm Shan experienced.
Shan has stated that she filed a complaint against Jupiter Keyes with police.
Why should I know who Shan is?
Shan Isabell disrupted the Alice Glass and Crystal Castles fanbases.
In 2014, when Alice Glass announced her solo career, it was framed as her departure from the mystery of Crystal Castles: a chance to finally live openly, honestly, and on her own terms. The problem is that Alice Glass didn’t emerge as a solo artist so much as she exchanged one duo for another. Fans’ questions in her solo era about her wellbeing, isolation, autonomy, and creative control were discouraged.
They were conditioned not to ask. “Don’t question Jupiter. She’s finally living her truth. She says she’s fine, so she is. Jupiter saved her.”
But here’s the problem. People did have a lot of questions. People did see concerning behavior and inconsistencies, but they had nowhere to speak. Fan spaces were tightly controlled and censored. And those closest to Alice, who could have clarified what was happening, remained loyal and silent. The quest for the truth was forced to a standstill.
That changed when Shan Isabell published her statement on June 14, 2024.
Shan’s statement describes the harrowing abuse she experienced while in a relationship with Jupiter Keyes, but it delves even deeper. It includes what she said was disclosed to her by Jupiter about his control over Alice Glass and Alice’s solo career. Shan recounts Jupiter describing himself as the actual brains behind Alice’s solo career, admitting that he wrote her songs and interviews, and additionally he did a lot of work to make it look like Alice did more in Crystal Castles than what was accurate and truthful. He disclosed personal grievances he had with Alice, like insulting her talent and even his attraction to her, allegedly to triangulate the two women and make sure they never united against him. Shan states Jupiter told her that Ethan Kath reprimanded Jupiter over his interest in younger girls, a claim that Shan says raised serious questions about Jupiter’s patterns.
You should know who Shan is, because she’s a pivotal whistleblower. Her statement illuminated patterns in Jupiter’s behavior that were kept out of public view, shielded by proximity, trust, and the quiet protection that often comes as the price paid by those in close relationships with Alice Glass and Jupiter Keyes.
Why should we care who Shan is and seek justice for her?
Shan describes herself before she met Jupiter as a different person than she is today. She says it has been almost impossible to get herself back after her experience with him.
If Shan describes such severe harm after only 2 years speaking with Jupiter, it’s reasonable to ask what 11 years of his influence did to Alice.
The fans, Shan, and even Alice’s own sister Paige have described Jupiter as a dangerous and manipulative person whose behavior poses an ongoing risk. Despite this, Jupiter is framed in the press and on social media as Alice’s protector and savior, which leverages her role as an abuse survivor to justify his proximity and control, while this same framing allows him entry into fan spaces where he is trusted with others’ safety. Yet many of the changes and declines fans have observed in Alice since leaving Crystal Castles- personally, creatively, and publicly - align with the patterns of influence Shan describes also happened to her while in a relationship with Jupiter. Alice’s solo career was framed as a period of healing and autonomy, but the continued presence of the man described in Shan’s statement raises the question of whether genuine recovery and artistic authenticity was ever the aim/intended result.
Shan doesn’t have a large social media presence. She doesn’t have an established audience. All she has is her testimony- and without amplification, it risks being ignored. Especially after public and private attempts to silence her, and silence fan pages who amplify her.
Seeking justice for Shan matters because her account sheds light on patterns of manipulation and harm that have gone unchecked for years. Where is Shan now?
Shan’s online presence today is intentionally limited. She has not gained visibility, or opportunity from speaking out, nor does she desire to.
She does engage directly at times, answering questions or participating in fan spaces through her own social media accounts. However, revisiting the material can be destabilizing, and she has described experiencing trauma responses when aspects of her relationship with Jupiter are reactivated.
